Thank You Letters
This is often an all too often under-utilized part of the Job Search
Strategy. In the day of e-mail, it is a lot easier to accomplish.
Remember the "thank you letter", is an opportunity to distinguish yourself from the other
candidates. It is similar to a follow-up sales letter. Through this medium you have another occasion to:
- Keep you fresh in the interviewer's mind
- Single yourself out
- Show-case your skills, talents and your good manners
- Interviewing can be a "thankless job". Be one
of the few to say "Thank You!"
- Answer questions and provide additional information
- Express appreciation to those who have helped you
during your visit (Make notes during your visit!)
- Do it within twenty-four hours, two days the most.
- Don't do it as soon as you get home. Remember
interviews might still be going on - Closer to the time of decision of hiring
is better - Timing is important
- Be short and simple (two paragraphs is usually
enough). Say "Thank You!", and genuinely mean it.
- Restate your interest and excitements about about the
prospect of working there
- Use key words that will arrest the attention of the
interviewer, particularly buss words of the qualifications they are looking
for
- Make sure you spell the interviewer's name correctly.
Your "Thank You Letter" is to add to your credit, not to your debit.
- Proof-read it as you did your resume
- Another Type of ThankYou Note:
After you have landed the job, Don't forget to thank the other
people who helped you to get there!
