Reference Checks
One of the areas that we do not pay enough attention to in our
Job Search, is the whole area of our Referees.
(A secret out of the bag: Many employers do not check them
either. However, just in case your prospective employer is one of the diligent
ones, be prepared!).
Questions that must be addressed.
Whom do I choose ?
Why do I choose?
Before you use someone's name as a reference, be sure you ask
their permission. Most people are only too willing to
help you in your job search efforts. However, common courtesy and wisdom
dictate that you ask permission. Extend the courtesy, minimize the surprises and
maximize your benefits.
Helpful Hints:
- Choose people who know you and can speak positively
about your assets and suitability for the job.
- After the interview, tell your referee what job you
have applying for and ask them to expect a call.
- Tell them what to say - Help them with the script.
Tell them of special skills and qualifications that are required for the job,
etc.
- Remember to have good references, you must be
referable.
- No one wants to give a good reference to a "bad
character" and loose their credibility
- Have a typed copy of the information on your referees
when you go for interviews
- Use the same format as the first page of your Resume.
- Everything you leave with a prospective employer
should have your identification and contact information
