The Events of Good Friday

The Events of Good Friday, like the Events of Maundy Thursday are difficult to place in a tidy chronological sequence.  This is for the same reason mentioned in the chronology for Holy or Maundy Thursday. Let me repeat that here:

It is a very complex task of putting a sequence to the many interwoven events and discourses and yet remaining true to what is recorded in the Gospels. As a result, the chronology here will be rough in certain places.  I will make no attempts to smooth out these wrinkles.  This is expected when we are attempting to put together the accounts of four different authors who wrote with different purposes and from different perspectives.  Harmonization of the Gospels has always had its challenges. The things that I cannot harmonize, I always put in the category of “not fully understanding it yet.”  I am amazed at how many of these things appear to come together when I spend time in the Scriptures.

Here is a possible Sequence of the Events of Good Friday:

The trial of the early morning was a sham.  It was just to ratify the decision that was already made during the night (Lu 22:66-23:1).  This trial was "to make it legal".

  1. Jesus Before Pilate – First Roman Phase (Lu 23:1-5)
  2. Jesus Before Herod - Second Roman Phase (Lu 23:6-12)
  3. Jesus Before Pilate the Second Time – Third Roman Phase (John 18:39-19:16)
  4. The Mockery of the Roman Soldiers (Matt 27:27-30)
  5. The Journey to Golgotha (Lu 23:26-33)
  6. The First Three Hours of the Crucifixion (Lu 23:33-38; John 19:18-27; Lu 23:39-43 )
  7. The Last Three Hours of the Crucifixion (Matt 27:45-50; John 19:28-30; Lu 23:46)
  8. Witnesses of the Death of Jesus (Matt 27:51-56)
  9. Verification of Jesus Death (John 19:31-38)
  10. Handing Over of the Body of Jesus to Joseph of Arimathea (Mark 15:42-45; John 17:39-42)
  11. The Body Placed in the Tomb (John 19:39-42)
  12. The Tomb Watched by the Women and Guarded by the Soldiers (Matt 27:61-66)
