Family Matters

  •  How important is your family to you?

  •  Is "family" one of your dominant values?

  •  Why is it that so many of us are hitting "home runs" in the world, but we are "striking out" at home?

  •  Can you afford to strike out at home? What are (would be) the consequences of striking out at home?

  •  Whose idea is the family, any way?

  •  Why is the family important?

  •  If I am from a dysfunctional family, does that mean that I am doomed to perpetuate this vicious cycle for the rest of my life?

  •  Is there something better to pass on to posterity? (Legacy)

  •  What does the Bible say about the family?

  •  Does the Bible offer help to those who would like to focus on the family in the anti-family and anti-marriage society that we live in?

  •  Do we still believe in the "antiquated, patriarchal drivel" that the husband is the head of the family?

  •  What is the meaning of headship?

  •  Does male headship mean that the wife is a doormat?

  •  Do I own my kids, or are the a gift (a stewardship trust) from God?

  •  What is your greatest mark on this world?

So many questions!   Are there any answers?

Preparing for a Good Thing & Making a Good Thing Better!

Family and Marriage are God's ideas. In the creation account in Genesis, when He created the universe, the Scriptures tell us that it was "very good" (Gen 1:31).  But, we saw among the prefect creation, that was very good, there was something that was "not good", i.e. man being alone (Gen 2:18). So God in His infinite wisdom and love, decided to do something about it.  His solution was "to make a helper" that was suitable for man.

We often say that when a child came into the world that he/she did not come with an instruction manual. In a sense that is true.  But we fail to realize that there is an instruction manual. This manual is given "before" the child came into the world.  Come to think about, this is the best time to have an instruction manual. We need to use it to prepare.  God has not only given us a manual for children, but for: marriage, home, family, parents, husbands, wives, fathers, mothers and children.  There is guidance, if we would seek and heed it.  Whatever God commands, He does for our ultimate and eternal well-being.  Whenever we disregard and disobey Him, we do so to our peril.

The best thing we can do for society is to get back to the Biblical basis for family and marriage and start applying the principles of the Bible where it matters most.  Some one has well said: "If what you believe does not make a difference, it makes no difference what you believe."

Marriage is the commitment of a life time, yet many couples spend more time preparing for the wedding than they do for the marriage.  It is not uncommon to witness a declining significance of the vow in proportionate to the extravagance of the ceremony.

This material was designed as a Course to Prepare a Couple for Marriage.  However, it was done in a way where  it can be easily modified to be used in a Marriage Enrichment Seminar.   Using the texts and questions in each session, it can also be used in a Family Bible Study or a Sunday School Class.

Use it as much as you want to.  Remember, your returns will be proportionate to your investment!
